Username: smerdle Dragon Tear Type: Diabi Continent: Soudul Name: The Twilight Market Description:This bustling market on the edge of Obsidian City started with a single stall, but in the decade that followed, it grew to its current size. It is open throughout the day and most of the night, and caters to average shoppers looking for necessities, as well as tourists from across Soudul. What follows are descriptions of some of its major stalls, though this list is not exhaustive.
Weaver's Pride
Hours: Mid-morning to midnight Proprietor(s): Claud (♂), Darrau (♀) Staff: Gam (♂) |
Everyone who frequents the Twilight Market is familiar with this clothing stall, and not just because it's the closest to the entrance. Stylish twins Claud and Darrau alternate the running of this place, and if their complexions are a bit too fair for full-blooded Raguati, only the foolish dare comment. Their childhood friend, Gam, acts as head of security for the stall, and he has a very long memory. Those who are brazen enough to steal from Weaver's Pride and manage to get away with it are wise to alter their features before they return, just in case.
This stall carries quality clothes for all budgets, though from the way Claud and Darrau behave, you'd think they sell the most luxurious items in all of Soudul. |
Unnamed Scarf Stand (Murela's)
Hours: Mid-morning to just after sunset Proprietor(s): Murela (♀) Staff: n/a |
In an exquisitely decorated stall at the far edge of the market, Murela sells delicate scarves and wraps, coveted by Raguati across Obsidian City. Her wares are pleasing to apprentices and masters alike, as the unique embroidery is visible to both. The availability of her stall's wares is based entirely on Murela's whims, though barring unforeseen circumstances, she opens at mid-morning and closes just after watching the sun set. She has an insatiable love of gossip, and there are rumors that she will make a gift of one of her scarves to those who bring her the juiciest tidbits. |
Blooms
Hours: Mid-morning to an hour before sunset, three days a week Proprietor(s): Mautt (♀) and Hadona (♂) Staff: Ia (♀), Saundra (♀), Kebb (♂), Vivah (♀) |
Blooms is a smaller stall run by Mautt and Hadona—a married couple—and their four children. They grow about a sixth of their flowers in their personal greenhouse and import the rest, which takes much of their time. As such, the stall is only open three days a week. Prices are reasonable for loose flowers and run much higher for curated bouquets and arrangements. |
Fish to Fruit
Hours: Early morning to an hour before sunset Proprietor(s): Avaan (♂) Staff: Sian (⚥), Kythe (♀), Amelus (♂), Dendra (♀), Ruklan (♂), Braithe (♀) |
This daytime stall sells "eveything from fish to fruit", hence the name. Avaan thought he was being clever, but he has since entertained enough customers who believe he specializes in magically morphing fish into fruit that he wonders if he ever understood what 'clever' meant in the first place.
It's a popular spot, serving as a supermarket for those who prefer the freshest ingredients. There is a rotating cast of employees who handle stock, sales, barking, and deliveries on behalf of the stall, and many young Raguati find their first job here as well. |
Enchanted Forest
Hours: Mid-morning to sunset Proprietor(s): Emett (♂) Staff: Stone (♂), Rock (♀), Pebble (♀), Leaf (♀), Twig (♂) |
A fanciful stall strewn with living plants and magical fountains, the Enchanted Forest is a toy shop focused on wooden and plush versions of the creatures you might find in an actual forest. Emett handles all custom orders himself and strongly suggests that his employees adopt a themed name while they're on the clock. |
The Labyrinth
Hours: Mid-morning to several hours after midnight Proprietor(s): Halum/Ast (♂) Staff: Wuulen (♀), Melint (♀), Rolanu (♂) |
Neither the largest stall nor the smallest, The Labyrinth is seemingly always open, or at least it appears that way to those who keep fairly normal hours themselves. During the day, this business specializes in mystical items, perfumes, and candles of a fairly innocuous and touristy nature. All of these goods are of high quality, but they tend toward frivolity. At night, however, The Labyrinth's stock shifts toward the useful, and even sinister. Phony love potions and beauty creams make way for tinctures and balms that are guaranteed to actually work, and prices rise accordingly.
Perhaps the strangest thing about this stall is not its wares but its owner. In actuality, The Labyrinth is run by identical twins Halum and Ast, but most are only aware that the former exists. The quieter sibling, Ast, mans the stall in the evening under his brother's name, so it appears that the mysterious Halum never sleeps. |
Cocoa and Company / Misty Elixirs
Hours: Early morning to midnight Proprietor(s): Okso (♂) / Paren (♂) Staff: Any Raguati looking for part-time work |
These popular drink stalls are locked in a constant rivalry. If Cocoa and Company extends its hours, Misty Elixirs will follow. If Paren tests a new drink, Okso will have a comparable brew a few hours later. The competition certainly benefits visitors to the Market, as they get some of the tastiest and most innovative hot and cold drinks in Soudul for very affordable prices. |
Picnic / Dragon's Bane / The Toasty Table
Hours: Mid-day to sunset / mid-day to sunset / mid-day to midnight Proprietor(s): Jobue (⚥) / Camuko (♀) / Tala (♂) Staff: Echarus (♂) / Tein (♀) / Luroki (♀) (and others) |
Unlike the beverage stalls, the owners of the Twilight Market food stalls are friendly compatriots. It helps that the three main ones serve different sorts of foods. Picnic specializes in hand pies and vegetables cut for snacking, Dragon's Bane serves soup, and The Toasty Table is a sit-down spot with savory shareable platters. |
Aletha's Delights
Hours: Mid-day to several hours after sunset Proprietor(s): Aletha (♀) Staff: Iven (♂), Onaev (♂), Enthi (♂), Seatham (♂), Friel (♂) |
At first glance, passersby might assume that Aletha is selling attractive young men, but upon closer inspection it becomes obvious that fine desserts are her true specialty. Cakes and pies are in abundance, though there are also plenty of less common items like caramel apples and sugar pops. Aletha does take custom orders, but she usually passes them off to her underlings to fulfill. |
